While counting developing and thriving cities, it might become impossible to neglect Surat. A celebrated city of Gujarat, there was a time when Surat used to be a massive seaport. And today, the city is a hub of diamond polishing and cutting. Standing tall at the position of 8th when counting largest cities, it is also the 9th largest urban agglomeration of the country.
Situated 284 km away from Gandhinagar, the state capital of Gujarat, Surat is the administrative capital of the Surat district. From Ahmedabad and Mumbai, this city is approximately 265 km and 289 km away respectively. In the proximity of the Arabian Sea, the centre of Surat is situated on the River Tapti.
A study conducted in 2016 stated that Surat is the fourth fastest growing and developing city of India. Not just that, but in 2013, this city had bagged the award for the best city by the Annual Survey of India’s City-Systems (ASICS). Furthermore, it was the first smart IT city of the country being founded by the Microsoft CityNext Initiative in collaboration with Wipro and Tata Consultancy Services. And in 2015, this city was selected for an IBM Smarter Cities Challenge grant.
Back in 2010, this amazing city of Gujarat was the 3rd cleanest city of the country as per the records of Indian Ministry of Urban Development. Since the city is quite well-known and famous for cutting and polishing of diamonds, hence, Surat is known as the “Diamond City of India.”
Going back to the history lane, it is said that Surat was founded by a Brahmin, called Gopi. They named this city as Suryapur or Surajpur. History has several shreds of evidence of the city being ravaged many times. At first, in the 12th and 15th century, Muslims robbed Surat. It was followed by the Portuguese Empire who came and destroyed the city. But then, in 1514, a Portuguese traveller, Duarte Barbosa, outlined this city as one of the most important seaports that were frequently used by ships coming from Malabar and other parts of the world. By 1520, the city was named as Surat and is known likewise since then.
Later in 1573, Mughals started reigning over Surat. During the Mughal empire, the city was the most thriving port. Although the city was quite rich, still grubby streets and mud and bamboo residences dominated the area. However, around the riverfront, a few warehouses and mansions were to be found that belonged to local merchant princes and traders from Turkey, England, Armenia, Dutch, and French.
Back in history, several hospitals for horses, cows, insects, and flies were to be found in the city as well. These hospitals were run by Jains. Considering the population in mind, England commenced its first trading factory for India in this city back in 1612. In no time, it had turned into an Indian emporium, exporting cloth and gold. The major industries in this city were textile manufacturing and shipbuilding. The Tapti River’s coast was specifically meant for shipbuilders at that time. But Maratha King Shivaji came and dismissed the city almost two times. Such raids frightened traders and it brought the city to ruins.
Throughout the 18th century, the shipbuilding industry of this city saw an extreme fall, which took the city along to its downfall. Around that time, Britishers and Dutch people claimed the city, however, in 1800, only Britishers were left to have an administrative control over Surat. By the mid-19th century, Surat’s situation remained stagnant. And, with Indian railways coming into existence, the city started thriving again.
Soon enough, Surat also started gaining recognition for silk, brocades, cotton, gold and silver objects. The city got famous because of the revival of the ancient art of fine muslin manufacturing. Apart from diamond and textile, the city boasted about an amazing science centre, indoor stadium, and cricket stadium. Transportation and public safety were the primary concerns and it flourished well.
Throughout the time, Surat has provided many talented and indigenous people to the country. Right from the famous composer of Bollywood Ismail Darbar to a great tennis player, Harmeet Desai, Prachi Desai, Sanjeev Kumar, Hardik Pandya, Farooq Sheikh, and many more other well-known personalities who have come up from this city of diamond.
