Kovilpatti aka Covilpatti is a municipality in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. Also called the Lonavala of South India, this place holds immense popularity as a candy lover’s paradise. The town in Thoothukudi district is also a hub for markets laden with colourful sweets, vibrant plastic toys, and a myriad of other knick-knacks. Synonymous to its name are two famous products - matchsticks and Kovilpatti kadalai mittai. These humble yet delicious bites are often found in non-descript street-side shops, stocked in old-fashioned beaker-like bottles.
The place holds the legend of Shenbagavalli-Poovananathar temple - where Sage Agasthya had arrived to restore earth level balance when it had sunk in the north during the wedding of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi.
Another notable spot of rich cultural history is the Kathiresan temple - built on the Kathiresan hills at the western side of the city. The notable cotton-cultivating centre - Ettayapuram is situated about 15 kilometres east of Kovilpatti. For touristy visitors, other destinations worth a visit are the Ettayapuram Jamin palace ruins, Manimandapam of Bharathiyar, and the Sri Muthusamy Deikshidar memorial. From this very city, we offer you some of the choicest variations of kadalai mittai such as ellu mittai, mixer mittai, and kokko mittai.
