Interesting Stories Behind Mango Names

Mango

Mango, commonly known as ‘aam’, originated in Eastern India 5000 years ago.  This much-loved fruit is called ‘aamra phalam’ in Sanskrit and ‘aam phal’ in Hindi. With time, the fruit gained popularity and it migrated to South India, where Tamil was the most prominent language. ‘Fruit’ in Tamil is called ‘kay’, giving this juicy seasonal delight a new name, ‘aamkay’. ‘Aamkay’ gradually became ‘maamkaay’, then ‘maangai’, and finally ‘maanga’, thanks to transposition of pronunciation. When the Portuguese visited India, they came across this delightful treat and wrote about it in several letters. Since most Portuguese words end with ‘o’, ‘maanga’ was misinterpreted as ‘mango’ by the British. Soon this new word found its way in English vocabulary. Fascinating! Isn’t it?

There are more such interesting stories behind the names of different mango varieties. This blog will list a few for you.
