How Langra Aam Got Its Name
Do you find yourself pitying differently abled people?
Please don't. There are umpteen examples of those who turned their weaknesses into strength such as Tom Cruise, Franklin D Roosevelt, and Stephen Hawkins.
Here's our own desi man who was called Langra because he limped. However, Langra didn't use his physical limitation as a lame excuse to not do anything.
The story takes us over 300 years back in time when the British were still planning to visit India in the veil of East India Company. Amidst the chaos that followed Aurangzeb's death, this plot focuses on a small village in Banaras (Varanasi). A differently abled man, called Langra by his peers, planted a mango seed of unknown origin that gave rise to the variety we know as Langra aam today. Distinctive sweet flesh underneath dark-green skin and a unique aroma have catapulted the Banarasi Langra into a household name.
