India is a culturally rich country. With 29 states and seven union territories, our country has many different varieties of handloom, unique to each state. From Kashmir’s vibrant Pashmina, Raffal and silk sarees to Andhra Pradesh’s rich Pochampally, Dharmavaram, and Venkatagiri – Indians have through the centuries, woven magic through generations. All hand-woven textiles in India are distinct and can easily be identified to their state of origin.
Handloom is essentially material woven by hand on a loom (an equipment used for making fabric by weaving yarn or thread). According to an archaeological find in the Dolni Vestonice site, weavers of the Upper Paleolithic Era wove twined- and plain-woven cloth. The oldest-known textiles and fabrics are the remains of finely woven cloth, woven from plant fibres found in Peru -- which date back to 10100 and 9080 BCE.
In the 11th century, many of the weaving patterns were invented. These patterns are still used today by artisans. It was during this time, that skilled weavers developed highly specialised textile. Slowly, weaving became more specific and dedicated and weavers shifted from family units to more organised units.
During the Industrial Revolution (1760-1815), weaving became mechanised and much easier with the invention of the fly shuttle. With many inventions and mechanisation taking place in this era, weaving became commercial -- with the process taking up a fraction of the time compared to the traditional method.
With modern technology, textiles had dramatic and attractive designs that were widely available in the market. Handloom soon became a thing of the past. People preferred to use new materials and cloth rather than stick with traditional fabric. Handloom and handloom cottage industries suffered a setback as the demand for modern fabrics grew. Many industries were on the verge of shutdown. Realising this, the Indian government has launched several schemes to revive the industry. Steps were taken to help handloom compete with fabrics in the market.
Today, handloom is widely appreciated as more and more people look for traditional patterns and material and also feel the need to contribute to this industry. Weavers now incorporate modern patterns and designs to attract consumers. New designs and weaving processes are innovated to cater to the needs of customers.
Handloom is now a fashion statement. Many fashion designers use handloom to promote this dying art. Taking their cue from the fashion world, people now sport kurtis, shirts, skirts, sarees, and other forms of clothing -- made from handloom materials.
