India’s original baking expert

A trip to Surat is incomplete without a visit to the oldest bakery in India. Yes, the world-famous Dotivala Bakers & Confectioners – pioneers of baking since the 17th century.

The story of this sought-after store began during the reign of the Dutch. The Dutch had a baking warehouse in Surat whereby five Parsee gentlemen were employed to make breads for their colonies. As their rule came to an end, the Dutch handed over the entire baking inheritance to one of the five gentlemen – Faramji Pestonji Dotivala. And, a new chapter in India’s baking history unfolded.

Of course, it was a tough time for Dotivala – what with finding the right ingredients and tools for his unique recipes. In times when Indians were not very open to the idea of eating baked items, he had to carve a niche for his products. But where there is passion and hardwork, there is no room for disappointment. He overcame every challenge to become India’s original baking expert.

Dotivala’s brilliance and foresight was such that he could envisage the future of baking in India. He tweaked the traditional Dutch recipes to cater to the Indian palate and came up with the first Irani biscuits and nankhatai aka Indian biskoot. Today, these are not just famous in Surat but are loved worldwide.

Did you know that even doctors in olden times recommended patients to consume Dotivala’s famous farmasu Surti batasa or butter biscuits? These were low in calories and easy to digest. This was the legacy of the brand.

Today, Dotivala Bakers & Confectioners is well into its 6th generation – making their ancestors proud and customers happy with finest quality batasa, nankhatai, and khari biscuits. Jamshed P. Dotivala and Cyrus Dotivala are the flag-bearers who are instrumental in extending the family’s heritage further.

The brand still uses traditional production methods with modern technology infusions. Their motto is to maintain high standards of quality. Currently, they have two production outlets from where Surti bakery delicacies are exported to different parts of the world. This ISO-certified company has been the recipient of ‘Times Food Award for the Best Bakery’ in 2008.
