They say it is quite true, there wouldn’t be any bold and dynamic people as we can find in Bihar. The state is filled with such amazing people who not only boast about their culture but their language and assets as well. That is the reason why Biharis are, quite literally, celebrated all over the country.
Talking about Bihar, how can one leave its magnificent cities behind, isn’t it? Cities of Bihar are not only celebrated for their royalty and elegance but are also known for several other reasons. Out of all the cities, Chhapra is the extremely praised one. Chhapra, also known as Chapra, is one such city in the Saran district of Bihar, which also serves as the headquarter. The city has several wonderful things to offer that can leave you in awe. It is located near the exact connection of the Ganges river and the Ghaghara river.
Somehow, this town has managed to generate a great significance not only during the ancient and medieval period but in the modern times too. According to the beliefs, there are generally two dissimilar clarifications to the name of the town. The first interpretation delineates its name to be “chah” as in six and “para” meaning a unit of distance. It is generally believed that the significance of this name is derived from the fact that the town is situated 6 km away from the north, west, and east of the Ganga and Ghaghara rivers.
The second interpretation is quite philosophical. This has to do with “para”, which means getting rid of “chah” as in six of the bad qualities such as anger, lust, greed, ego, emotional attachment, and jealousy.
The origin of the Chhapra city dates back to the 9th century in the historical records, where it has been referred to as a village known as Dighwa Dubauli. Even during the Mahabharata, the city has a mention for providing a cottage to Guru Dronacharya. Not just that, but Chhapra started growing its popularity and importance during the 18th century. There was an ample of commerce and trade that was taking place in this town and was thriving at a great speed. French, Dutch, English, and Portuguese established saltpetre refineries in the city and Chhapra accumulated status as a river-based market. That was also the time when Britishers combined Chhapra with some other district, known as Champaran, to make it a huge deal.
After that, in 1866, the town of Champaran was announced as a separate entity and Chhapra was merged with Tirhut somewhere in 1908. For a few years, there were several administrative divisions that the town saw. And in 1972, Chhapra finally became a separate division that had headquarters within the town’s territory itself. Situated at a distance of a few minutes from Uttar Pradesh, the city also comprised of significant road and rail connections with the other parts of the country.
Although the city is famous for several things, artefacts, and monuments, however, one of the most considerable aspects of Chhapra is its famous Shakti peeth temple, which is known as Ambika Bhavani. Devotees and pilgrims from around the country come here to specifically take blessings from the goddess present here.
As per the legends, the temple consists of a yagna kund that belongs to the father of Goddess Sati – Daksha. After facing the humiliation of her husband, Shiv, by her father, the Goddess jumped into the same yagna kund.
Though not well-known, Chhapra is not lagging behind when it comes to infrastructural development. By 2022, the city is going to see its first double-decker flyover, which is apparently going to be the biggest one in the country. It would be almost 3.5 km long and will run from Gandhi Chowk to Nagarpalika Chowk. Recently, in July 2018, the foundation stone of this flyover was laid by the chief minister of the state. Being constructed with the cost of ₹ 411.31, the responsibility of this double-decker flyover has been given to Bihar Rajya Pul Nirman Nigam Limited (BRPNNL).
Not just buildings and evolvement, Chhapra has given several notable people from its womb to the country as well. Dr Rajendra Prasad, who was the freedom fighter as well as the first president of the country was from this city. Even Laloo Prasad Yadav belongs to Chhapra. Not just that, but highly famous music composers of Bollywood, Anand-Milind, are also from here.
