About Bhagat Halwai, Agra

Agra’s Best. Since 1795.

The Mughals had cast their net wide across India, greatly influencing art, religion, food, and culture. Just as many aspects of modern-day India carry their royal imprint, Agra’s Bhagat Halwai too gives you a taste of this glorious past. It was founded by Lekh Raj Bhagat on the banks of the Yamuna as a humble shop in 1795 to delight locals and tourists with unique and traditional products. This extraordinary history of Bhagat Halwai is not the only awe-inspiring factor – its sweets are remarkable too!

It started small by serving scrumptious and flavourful puri-sabzi, bendai (stiff puri), and sweets such as rabri (thickened milk), jalebi, and burfi. The use of cow dung and wood, instead of charcoal, as fuel was believed to have made the food tastier. It maintained high standards of hygiene, never even directly touching money during transactions. With the advent of technology, the ways of carrying out business have definitely changed but the guiding principles of offering quality products and service have remained unchanged. Today Bhagat Halwai is run by sixth generation scion Pradeep Bhagat and it has branched out into fine dining and baked goods as well.

Specialities

The present-day specialities of the brand are many and include laddoo (besan laddoo, atta laddo, special gond atta ladoo); dry-fruit mithai (anjeer roll, kaju gujiya, kaju dry-fruit jelly, kaju diamond, kaju kulfi, kaju pan, kaju-pista roll, kaju chandra mukhi, kaju gulfam, kaju parmal, kaju sankh, kaju spin, dry-fruit chiku, dry-fruit mango, sugarless anjeer dates dry fruit laddoo, sugarless khajur roll, sugarless anjeer barfi); and other delicious offerings such as soan papdi, doda barfi, special doda barfi, and Karachi halwa.

Consistency in taste and service is the hallmark of Bhagat Halwai. While it still uses traditional ingredients and methods to prepare food, it also innovates with new flavours and ideas. Customers like its unique offerings and visit it often with families and friends.
