Best Madhya Pradesh Food To Save You From Sudden Hunger Pangs

by Team Salebhai - 22-Jun-2017 - Hometown Special

Being from an Army family, we tend to move a lot. So while we were still settling down, gathering household stuff, and gearing ourselves for the two-and-a-half-years tenure in the small Punjabi city of Pathankot, we could not help but miss our ‘chaat days’ in the previous posting which was in the heart of India. Yes, I literally mean the heart of India – Madhya Pradesh. Besides being mesmerized by the beauty of the ancient Khajuraho temples, magnificence of the Gwalior fort, the grandeur of the Apsara falls in Panchmarhi, and the colours of the crisp chanderi drapes, I was head over heels with the state’s locals delicacies.

One evening, on my way to run a usual errand, I saw some street vendors spread over 200 meters. The glitter of their Chinese LED lights was alluring all the passers-by alike and it was impossible to not succumb to the temptation myself. Feasting on the scrumptious pani puris, local burger, sev puri, and more, I could identify the same old taste of MP. And I could not keep myself from asking the vendor where he was from and he replied with pride, ‘Morena, MP.’

The most amazing thing about Madhya Pradesh food is that the strong essence of the preparations linger in the mouth long after you’ve polished them off. While the state’s cuisine has a lot to offer, here are some of the best options you can always carry with you to satiate yourself thoroughly when a sudden hunger pang strikes.

Indori Snacks

Poha

How could I not start with this one? Deliciously light yet filling and wholesome, this is the most loved breakfast of MP and other parts of North India. In Ujjain and Indore, they love to fry it lightly, often with peanuts, and savour it as a light meal or snack. You can even stock some of the state’s most authentic delicacies such as diet chiwda from Indore that can be relished without guilt as it is super healthy too.

Namakpare

A salty bite of satisfaction that would certainly keep pulling you back for more and more. This light, crunchy, anytime snack can be carried along easily for picnics and get-togethers, and to office or anywhere else; to be savoured alone or shared with good company. These small peppery bites are an absolute delight when hunger strikes, or even when it doesn’t. You can even relish namakpare with some refreshing dip, mint chutney, or your favourite beverage. These crisp, soft bites are absolutely difficult to resist and are a hit with all age groups.

Masala twisties

The authentic flavour of Indore is evident in each bite, and thus teatime becomes twice as much fun.

Ratlami sev

This is one thing I always have in stock. Available in so many flavours, this is the snack of all times. The grand 136-year-old crunchy delight, besides serving as a standalone snack, adds flavour to your staples such as poha, upma, sprouts and more. Garnishing your favourite gol gappa with this lends an exciting flavour and texture. Take one gol gappa, add a spoon of curd in it, dash of salt,a drop of ketchup, and fill it with ratlami sev. Voila! A quick and easy, yet lip-smacking snack to whip up when sudden guests arrive. Carry a pack of sev wherever you go and pull out a handful or two for quick bites. At more leisurely opportunities, mix with diced onions and tomatoes for a zesty twist.

The Indianised version of potato chips – aloo lachha – are super addictive strands of crisp potato that will fill you up till the next meal. Two slices of bread, a dollop of ketchup, and a handful of this peppery namkeen sandwiched in between will make for the perfect tea partner.

Author’s note

While I was in MHOW, a small town of Madhya Pradesh, I explored each and every famous chaat bhandaar, food destination, and other local shops offering authentic Madhya Pradesh food. The result was a bag full of dry snacks from the state that kept me company on the way back to my hometown up in the North. And much longer after.
