The famous and versatile tradition of Kutchi embroidery – a glorious gift from Kutch – beautifully reflects the rich heritage of our country. Concentrated around the western regions of Kutch and Saurashtra, local artisans weave their magic and come up with the most exotic, unique, and exquisite designs. With skilful mirror work, colourful beads, and bright colours, the threadwork ornaments fabrics and embellishes them to perfection.
There are several stories behind the mysterious origin of Kutch embroidery. Some believe that it has been there since the time of Ramayana. Others however insist that this workmanship was introduced by Kathi cattle breeders who were nomads and came to India to settle down. According to another fable, mochis or shoemakers learnt the embroidery from a Muslim wanderer in Sindh some 300 years ago, thereby leading to the genesis of this tradition. Over the centuries, various regional clans have perfected the intricate details of Kutch embroidery to create distinctive styles of their own such as rabari, hurmuchi, ahir, mochi, and mutwa.
This particular needlework is named hurmuchi and is done by womenfolk of Gadhda village near Raper, Kutch. The embroidery is painstakingly made by hand using colourful, cotton threads. Despite being an old artistry, this Kutchi threadwork is evergreen and continues to give a trendy look to different items of clothing. It is done on a variety of artefacts such as bags, jackets, dupattas, outfits, and mobile pouches. An exquisite form of embroidery, the Kutchi work truly reflects the vibrancy of India through its colours, embellishments, and motifs.
