5 Things That Are Sure To Make You Nostalgic

Nostalgia

The cycle of time often leaves an indelible mark on certain things that constantly take us back to certain points. These concealed memories carry a part of our soul, mirroring J K Rowling’s concept of horcruxes, albeit in a positive manner. Why does the slightest of glance at an old family album bring tears to your eyes? Why does earthenware, used for Indian desserts, open a realm of momentary loneliness and freezes time even in the loudest of parties? Why does the word ‘rocking horse’ inject a possessive emotion that borders irrationality? The answer is nostalgia. From an old pen that doesn’t even work anymore to a song that used to be sung your school morning assembly, there are numerous things that can make you nostalgic. Here are some.

Phantom cigarettes

Restrictions make things more exciting, don’t they? Cigarettes, for obvious reasons, have been a big no-no for kids of the late 20th century. Phantom cigarette helped kids of that era to satisfy their curiosity without actually smoking. As one of the most popular peppermint candies of the 90s, this was the only cigarette parents would gladly buy for their children. Remember holding it between your fingers and posing as your favourite film star? If you suddenly found a pack under your pillow as your Christmas gift, how will you react? Pop one in your mouth at the first chance!

Paper soaps

Remember the coloured, scented paper soap strips that were the first thing to go inside the backpack before going for a trip in the 90s? These travel-friendly pieces were the easiest way to maintain personal hygiene in long journeys. Made of completely dissolvable substances, paper soaps were waste-free must-haves whose practical importance surpassed the attached price tag by a huge margin. The world has witnessed the introduction of hand sanitisers and other cleansers which come with their own sets of advantages. However, the nostalgia that surround paper soaps can hardly be replaced by anything that modern technology has to offer.

Wooden toys

It was when Barbie was slowly entering the Indian market and the concept of soft toys was still new that wooden toys enjoyed maximum popularity among children. From the famous Kondapalli toys to simple wooden toys bought from fares, children of the 90s loved them all. The artistic engineering that allowed those wooden pieces to move and amuse the kids was incredible to say the least. If you have played with those wonders in your childhood, you surely have kept a few in your locker as trophies of your glory days. Modern kids have a wider range of toys to choose from including imported soft toys, small-scale drones, battery-run cars, and more. However, they will never know the emotional bondage that only wooden toys could create. If you do get a chance to introduce your children to these toys, will you?

Flavoured & coloured candies

Chewy fruit-shaped sugary candies, the hard-boiled orange-shaped orange candies, the spicy dark purple ones - the tastier these treats, the more restrictions were placed on them by cautious parents worried about their kids’ dental health. Those little children, tugging at their elders’ arms for a handful of these yummy bites have now grown up and ironically prohibit their own little ones from indulging too much in these sugary treats. However, if you take a moment to go back to your tastebuds as a child, you’d recollect the fun in an instant. From orange to ginger and from strawberry to chilli, the variety of flavours were almost as infinite as stars back then, remember? Guess what, you can actually buy candies online.
