About Shravani Arts

Where tradition complements the contemporary

Bhubaneswar-born Shravani Mohanty is deeply interested in studying ancient art forms. Growing up in the culturally rich state of Odisha, she has always been fascinated by the centuries-old Pattachitra. This temple art, usually depicting scenes from Hindu mythology, is mostly practised using natural colours and pigments on paper. National Award-winner Gokul Bihari Patnaik has nourished her love for this art, teaching her the finer nuances of this colourful and detailed discipline. Her passion has fuelled her travels across the length and breadth of the country, helping her explore and study different art forms. She has exhibited her works across India and won praises from many. While painting is Mohanty's passion, her mission is to keep traditional art alive by using modern clothing and furnishings as her canvas.

The artist also combines other art forms with Pattachitra such as Madhubani — a traditional art from Bihar. She is closely associated with the Army Wives' Welfare Association (AWWA), where she has taught traditional art forms. On September 14, 2015, Shravani founded Shravani Arts with the tagline 'Getting traditional and contemporary together'. She started off with small- and large-sized paintings, saris, and kurtas depicting mythology before moving onto dupattas, cushion covers, table runners, and table mats. She currently works out of her residence and plans to rent a workshop soon.

Specialities

Keeping her work eco-friendly, Mohanty uses authentic Indian handmade fabrics and traditional, natural dyes and colours. Her art shines though her work, which includes saris, paintings, cushion covers, table runners, and table mats. When customers buy Shravani Arts' creations, they not only bring home furnishings or clothes but also works of art.

MORE ABOUT THE ARTWORK

A spherical pattachitra with square borders, Shravani Arts Lord Shiva-Parvati and Ganesha-Kartika features the divine family of four together in a pleasant mood, amid a natural setting. Shiva and Parvati seem deep in conversation, flanked by sons Ganesha and Kartika in the tussar silk painting in organic colours. The delightful pattachitra serves to lift the spirits instantly.

The traditions of pattachitra paintings are more than a 1000 years old. They resemble the old murals of Odisha, especially in the religious centres of Puri, Konark and Bhubaneshwar, dating back to the 5th century BC.

ABOUT THE STUDIO

The brainchild of Shravani Mohanty, Shravani Arts seeks to marry traditional art forms with contemporary ideas and needs, with a special focus on pattachitra. Born and bought up in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, Shravani showed special interest in the art since childhood, going on to learn the art form from National Award winner renowned artist Gokul Bihari Patnaik. Shravani started with small exhibitions of her work to great appreciation and response, which encouraged her to set up her own label.
