About Mama Handicraft, Ahmedabad

Respecting traditions

Parimal Pandhi already had a flourishing family business of mouth fresheners, Mama Mukhwas Wala, when fate led him to venture into a new territory – handmade artefacts. Pandhi happened to purchase from his neighbour a shop selling puja items. That was when the idea to produce and source high-quality handcrafted products came to him. And Mama Handicraft came into being in 1995.

An enterprise which began by providing puja paraphernalia for weddings is today a well-organised setup in Gujarat – manufacturing and exporting handicrafts to the American and European markets. It deals in all kinds of wooden objets d’art from Gujarat, Jodhpur, Udaipur, and Saharanpur.  The chemical and lac items are procured from Delhi and handcrafted paper items from Gujarat and Jaipur.

With its factory and head office at Jodhpur, Mama Handicraft has a well-balanced team with in-house professional designers and artists. Quality-control personnel keep a close check to ensure standard parameters are met.

The brand produces 100-200 items monthly, with demand escalating during wedding and festive seasons.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Mama Handicraft Kalash is a three-piece set of two differently-sized kalash and a coconut. The total weight of the product is 506 g. The pots are made of steel and can be placed one on top of the other. All three traditional-looking items are beautifully embellished with colourful pearls in a delicate workmanship called Bharat work.

The set of kalash is durable and can be used on a regular basis or on special rituals. The eco-friendly item will enhance the look of your puja room, and the two kalash can be used to keep different items, depending on the requirement of the puja.

SIGNIFICANCE

Purna kalasha is an auspicious symbol of Hindu culture. It is where the deities reside – the giver of life, the creator. The holy water, knowledge of all Vedas, and the blessings of the Almighty are invoked in the kalash and its water thereafter used in all puja. This consecrated container plays a very significant role in almost all rituals such as griha pravesha (house-warming), weddings, havan (fire sacrifice), or daily worship.

HISTORY

‘Kalaśa’ in Sanskrit means pitcher, believed to contain ‘amrita’ or the elixir of life and viewed as a symbol of abundance, wisdom, and immortality. Traditionally, the kalash is filled with water, and a coronet of mango leaves and a coconut. The entire arrangement is called purna kalasha or purna kumbha and believed to have been generated during the Samudramanthan – the great churning of ocean.
