The story of the humble chikki – a traditional Indian sweet usually made with nuts, jaggery, glucose, and sugar – goes back more than 125 years. Maganlal Agarwal and his sons Ambalal and Mohanlal began to make and sell guddani – a crude form of chikki – in front of the Lonavala railway station in 1888. The crunchy, delicious, and nutritious snack soon became the talk of the town. Passengers would make a beeline for the sweet outside their shop and sometimes missed their trains in the bargain. The Railways gauged the candy’s popularity and requested the Agarwals to supply it on trains. Before fulfilling the huge order, the entrepreneurs branded their product Chikki – a name they felt resonated with the young and old alike.

Today Lonavala alone has 63 Maganlal Chikki franchises. Agarwals’ chikki manufacturing unit has been selected as a pilot project by UNIDO, FICCI (quality forum), and Maratha Chamber of Commerce (Pune) with a view to promote small-scale industries. The plant, equipped with custom-made machines from companies of international repute, is certified by Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point for adhering to codex standards.

With coordinated teamwork and evolving strategies, the company has achieved enviable daily sales of 2,000 kg and is targeting 5,000 kg in the near future. The third generation of entrepreneurs now carries forward the rich legacy of Maganlal Chikki.

Maganlal Chikki today offers over 30 varieties such as such as groundnut crush chikki, cashew chikki, til (sesame) chikki, chana (Bengal gram) chikki, kurmura (puffed rice) chikki, and rajgira (amaranth) chikki. A molten concoction of the nuts and syrup is poured onto a flat surface, cut into square slabs, and allowed to cool. What you get is a delicious nutty brittle which can replace traditional chocolate any day. Chikki is synonymous with Maharashtra and Lonavala’s Maganlal Chikki has given it a name and fame only few others can boast of. The delicious Maganlal Kaju Chikki, which is popular among children, is famously consumed during festivals.
