Bukaj, pronounced as “bu-kahj” comes from the Palestinian word “bukjah”, which defines a stack of clothes packed inside a suitcase. Therefore, the name is apt for this sweet which encloses nuts in a wrapping of dough and is shaped like an open purse. The roots of Bukaj can be traced back to the Middle Eastern countries of Lebanon and Palestine. It is most popular in Lebanon, where it is a compulsory delicacy during the festivals of Ramadan and Eid.  Owing to its delectable taste, this dessert has spread to the entire world and La Patessiere brings it here for you in India.

Bukaj kaju is a Lebanese assorted baklawa, made from phyllo (paper-thin sheets of dough) dough. Stacked layers of dough are cut into small square pieces and filled with the finest of cashew nuts. Each corner of the squares are then pulled to reveal the shape of an open top purse and baked to perfection. It has a crunchy and crispy texture with a brownish colour because of  the light baking involved.  The sugar syrup dipped cashews in it give a crunchy feel and sweet taste.
