Back to ROOTS

The story behind the origin of baklawa or baklava can be traced to different versions. The most accepted of them is that, this traditional sweet was first prepared in the Topkapi Palace of Istanbul. The ruling sultan used to gift trays laden with baklawa to his infantry units, in a ceremonial parade - Baklava Alayi. It was customary to use nuts, phyllo - flat bread, and syrup or honey in the preparation of this Turkish delicacy. The simple process involved layering walnuts, pistachios, or cashews with a flaky flat bread and then soaking it in syrup. With time, the delicacy became popular across various cultures and countries, while progressing to newer methods of preparation and fillings.
