The people of Ayodhya lit rows of lamps to welcome Lord Ram, his wife Sita, and brother Lakshman, who were in exile for 14 long years. This marked the beginning of  Deepawali. A luminous diya also signifies the submission of one’s soul to the supreme power.Diyas are used as temporary lightings for special occasions or as permanent fixtures in homes and temples. These oil lamps are often used in Hindu, Sikh, Jain, and Zoroastrian religious festivals and are used extensively  during Diwali and Karthikai Deepam. For Hindus, a lit lamp is replete with symbolism and significance. It illuminates, they feel, not only our physical surroundings but also our mind, soul and spirit.
