About Assamica Agro, Assam
The Triumph Of Traditional Tea
Concerned about consumers being duped into drinking organic tea with residues of pesticides, Manmoyuri Devi, PranabjyotiNath, and PallabjyotiNath decided to take matters into their own hands. The trio had grown up near vast tea gardens in Assam and therefore wanted the world to remember tea as fragrant and beneficial. They began with a small plot of land in 2007 and dedicated themselves to planting the shrub without harmful chemicals even though it meant low yield and susceptibility to pests and diseases. The team worked hard, just as their ancestors did, and though initially their produce was low, they gained appreciation among tea connoisseurs.
In 2010, they launched Assamica Agro and, after adopting the vrikshayurvedadoctrine of organic farming, improved their productivity and quality of tea. The company did well with its initial products – leaf Assam tea and leaf green tea. They turned to their roots by involving farmers and pickers who had been in the trade for generations. Many of the hands had their own small-scale tea production units. What the musketeers gained was expertise and centuries of wisdom. The experts taught them the art of growing and processing besides supplying fine-quality orthodox Assam tea with the best-quality leaves plucked by skilled labours. Known as ‘handmade teas’, their leaves are valued globally for being rare and expensive.
With an ear to the ground, Assamica Agro realises the growing popularity of green and herbal teas. Thus it now offers loose leaf green tea along with leaf green tea infused with herbs such as tulsi, rose, lemongrass, mint, and chamomile. It also offers teas in hand-sewn cotton bags.
Recording a monthly capacity of 1,000 kg of the finest tea including 200 kg of organic produce every month, the company is set to take the world by storm. What sets this brand apart is its strict adherence to rules and regulations of organic plantation and processing. Tea is sourced ethically from the grass roots who staunchly follow the guidelines of organic farming.
Certified by the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP), the brand takes its credentials seriously. Giving back to a society that has nurtured their enterprise, Assamica Agro offers a profit percentage to the farmers to help them increase the wages of their hired workers. This has snowballed into not just an organic movement that boosts local economy, but lifts the morale of those involved as well.
Assamica Agro offers whole leaf teas, which are produced through the original and orthodox method. These teas are extremely popular in European countries because of theirnatural form, full flavour, and taste. The brand also has a variety of loose green tea leaves that are rich in catechin and vitamins. Both varieties are fragrant and full-bodied. Loose green leaf tea has a shelf life of six to eight monthsand delivers that perfect newly picked taste. Their tea bags are made of 100% cotton and are hand-sewn by women groups from rural Assam. These tea bags are made for multiple infusions with enough space for the full leaves to unfold.
Every sip of Assamica Agro tea is a timetravel to quaint and flavourful Assam – the world’s tea capital.
